A great father, grandfather and a great-grandfather will be sorely missed by family and many many friends. He loved and enjoyed life to the fullest, from his retirement on this beautiful island to the song of a little bird at the window.

Port Moody Ecological Society
John Dunn

Fellow Volunteers,
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the loss of one of our founding and lifetime members, John Dunn. John was our oldest member at 92 years old. John had been battling ill health for some time, slipping away peacefully on 9th Feb.

He helped to build our hatchery 26 years ago and attended daily as a volunteer to help out with the maintenance, raising the coho and salmon and ensuring the smooth running of our hatchery.

John will be deeply missed by all and we pass along our sincerest sympathy to his wife, Erma, and their children. Please hold them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

SQUIRES, Leonard

March 25, 2018
Nisga’a Fisheries and Wildlife Department
Leonard Squires

Leonard “Squally” Squires was a passionate angler and devoted champion of Nass River salmon conservation. Leonard began his career with the Nisga’a Fisheries and Wildlife Department in 1992, the same year that the fisheries assessment program began. He worked on a great number of fisheries assignments, but sportfish monitoring and the Zolzap Creek Coho fences were his babies. Leonard took great pride in the smooth operation of these programs, often appearing on-site at all hours of the night to make sure everything was okay. It was at Zolzap Creek that he eagerly supported the Stream to Sea classroom education program. Anyone who has ever visited the Nass Valley to fish will remember Leonard’s smiling face and the passion he brought to salmon conservation. Leonard continued to fish and tag Coho well into December of 2017, before passing away in March 2018. He is sorely missed, but his great passion for all things salmon lives on through all those he touched.

BROLESE, Clara

March 25, 2018
Hyde Creek Watershed Society
ClaraBrolese

Long time member, Clara is greatly missed. Clara was our resident expert on the grey areas of legal, policy, procedures and much more. A dedicated supporter of our Society she is remembered for her wonderful sense of humour, kind soft manner, and quiet strong way of moving us out of some "deep water" and letting us believe it was our idea initially.

KELLY, Terry

March 2018
Millard/Piercy Watershed Stewards
ClaraBrolese

Long-time Millard/Piercy Watershed Steward, Terry Kelly, passed away in March 2018. Terry was a very enthusiastic and dependable volunteer who was always willing to help out when asked. Over the years he worked on various projects such as smolt counting, stream surveys for spawning salmon and coho fry rescue. He loved to build things and, along with his volunteer buddy, Bill Kennedy, constructed and repaired smolt counting fences and holding boxes.

Terry was very well liked by his fellow volunteers for his friendly nature and wonderful sense of humour. He was a great family man and occasionally brought his young grandson out to see what Grandpa was doing with the salmon. Terry is greatly missed by other members of Millard/Piercy Watershed Stewards.

THOMSON, John

May 29, 2018
Eagle Creek Streamkeepers
John Thomson
John, formerly of Burnaby, passed away peacefully in Abbotsford at the age of 92. He was born in Chase, BC on a small farm along with his 3 brothers. Life was hard so John enlisted in the Army only to find out he was too young for combat, but with a little sleight of hand, he managed to secure a postion as an instrument technician. At the end of the war, he signed aboard a freighter and travelled the world. His passion for many years was the Burnaby Lake trail system and Heritage Village. John was active on the Parks Commission and worked tirelessly for various political parties. He knew no bounds, converting the family car into a parade float and the family home into a sign painting shop. The "old salmon" is finally at rest.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Wayne Poole passed away peacefully on December 5th, 2018 at the age of 69. He will forever be loved and remembered by his wife Linda, sons Scott (Nicole) and Kevin (Sofia), his pup Zoey, and his beloved grandchildren Koen and Mila who had a special place in his heart. Wayne was born February 17, 1949 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved to Vancouver at the age of four. Wayne was a devoted father, husband, and grandpa and was always there to help in any way that he could with family, friends, and neighbours. He got joy from helping others and volunteered for the North Shore Streamkeepers and the Transportation Foundation. Lots of memories were made with family and friends including his Big Daddy golf buddies and the Rusty Cranks.
Wayne received exceptional care at the Lions Gate Palliative Unit and the North Shore Hospice from the doctors and nurses (his "A-team"). The Poole family would also like to thank Dr. Paul Sugar and Dr. Paul Klimo for their guidance. And to our family and friends, thank you for being so supportive through Wayne's journey.
So the next time you are hiking the trails, riding your bike, hitting that golf ball, and maybe doing a little fly fishing, think of Wayne with a smile.
