DUNCAN, Stewart

February 25, 2017
Tsolum River Restoration Society
Stewart Duncan

Stewart was a long-time volunteer director of the Tsolum River Restoration Society, in fact, one of the first. We shared a determined passion to clean up the headwaters where a copper mine abandoned in 1967 after 3 years of operation was leaching and causing high concentrations of copper that decimated historically significant salmon and steelhead runs, and trout stocks. Stewart embraced and embodied the Tsolum spirit. He drank the water, walked on the banks, explored the forests, photographed the natural beauty, learned more about the lack of fish, hosted an experimental coho project on his land, attended innumerable meetings and field trips of all kinds with government and industry partners, demanded action, guided the Society as president, built bridges - both literally and figuratively - with partners and the community, removed fish barriers, donated artwork and equipment, was a regular financial donor and most importantly contributed his time, which is the most valuable donation anyone can give. Stewart was an integral part of the Tsolum success story. He was determined, committed and kind. We will miss him dearly but will remember him, his opinions and points of view he shared with us over the years and they will guide us in our work to monitor and improve the health of the river and its creatures as the Comox Valley grows.

GRUBB, Gavin Keith

October 20, 2017
Field Technician and Education Coordinator - Smithers
Gavin Grubb

Gavin began his career with Fisheries and Oceans Canada in 2001 and worked as a field technician and education coordinator in the Salmonid Enhancement Program in Smithers, B.C. Sadly, Gavin passed away at 31, peacefully at this home in Smithers on October 20, 2017, with family at his side after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Gavin loved working with K-12 students in the stream to sea program and enjoyed sharing his knowledge about salmon life cycles and ecosystems, ecological footprints, and sustainability. And kids loved the man they called "Mr. Gavin". He was amazingly patient with his students and had a way of commanding respect. His technical expertise also went a long within the SEP program and his skills and contributions to DFO were many and valued.

Gavin was a loving husband, son, friend, colleague and educator who will be dearly remembered and missed by all who knew him
